About TVA Power Outages

The Tennessee Valley Authority is a federal wholesale generation and transmission utility — it sells bulk power, it does not (in most places) send a residential bill or own the last-mile wire to the house. Local distributors serve the meters: more than 150 municipal utilities and cooperatives such as NES in Nashville, KUB in Knoxville, EPB in Chattanooga, Memphis Light, Gas and Water, and many EMCs. If the lights are out, you report to that local power company, not to a TVA outage app the way you would to Duke or FPL. A TVA transmission event can still darken many distributors at once; a single broken tap on a co-op line never shows up as a TVA ticket.

How to Report a TVA Outage

Find the local power company on the bill (NES, KUB, EPB, MLGW, a cooperative, or another distributor) and use that company's outage map, app, or phone line. TVA's public pages describe the bulk power system; they are not a household restoration map. If several cities go dark at once, watch TVA and distributor statements together — but estimated restoration for your address still comes from the distributor that owns the meter.

Why TVA Power Goes Out

In Tennessee Valley — TVA generates and transmits; local power companies deliver to meters, an electric outage is usually local distribution, not a collapse of the bulk grid. Typical TVA patterns:

1. Read the local power company name on the bill — not only 'TVA'.
2. Open that distributor's outage map (NES, KUB, EPB, MLGW, EMC, or other).
3. See whether neighbors on the same tap are dark.
4. Report to the local power company app or phone, not as if TVA were a retail IOU.
5. Use distributor ETRs for the address; TVA pages will not show a household restoration pin.
