About ComEd Power Outages
ComEd is Exelon's electric utility for northern Illinois, including Chicago and the collar counties. Summer derechos, lake-effect wind, and winter ice are the storms that take down suburban overhead. In the city, a vault or cable fault can darken a few blocks without a cloud in the sky. Ameren Illinois serves much of downstate — a Springfield outage is usually not ComEd.
Users do not pick ComEd. The count is power reports from states where ComEd appears. That includes the whole of Illinois in our table, where Ameren and co-ops also operate. We are not ComEd.
How to Report a ComEd Outage
Use the ComEd app or ComEd Outage Map on cellular data. You can also report by phone or enrolled texting. Atom, ComEd's digital assistant, can walk through a known outage. If the map is clear, check the panel and whether the alley or the next bungalow still has lights.
Why ComEd Power Goes Out
In Northern Illinois, including Chicago and the collar counties, an electric outage is usually local distribution, not a collapse of the bulk grid. Typical ComEd patterns:
A fast Midwest wind event can drop trees across thousands of ComEd laterals in the collar counties in a single afternoon.
Ice loading on North Shore and far-west circuits snaps conductors that were fine the day before.
An underground failure in the Loop or along the lakefront can isolate a network without any overhead damage.
A transformer squirrel is a cliché because it is real — one contact can take a suburban tap down for an hour.
Before You Call ComEd
- Open the ComEd Outage Map or ComEd app and search the address.
- See if the next house, the alley garage, or the opposite side of the street is on.
- Check the main breaker and any GFCI in the garage or basement.
- Report in the ComEd app or by enrolled text if the map has no outage.
- Stay away from downed lines and report them to 911 and ComEd.
