About PG&E Power Outages

Pacific Gas and Electric serves most of northern and central California, from the North Coast through the Central Valley to the western Sierra. PG&E outages are not only storm damage: Public Safety Power Shutoffs, enhanced powerline safety settings, and wildfire-season wind events can de-energize circuits on purpose. An atmospheric river can also take trees into lines in the Bay Area while the Valley stays on.

Users do not choose PG&E on our form. The count is power reports from states where Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) appears — California in our table. Other IOUs and munis share that state. We are not PG&E.

How to Report a PG&E Outage

Use the PG&E app or the PG&E Outage Map on cellular data and enter the service address. You can also text OUT to 468378 (GO PG&E) if the account phone is enrolled. For a PSPS, PG&E publishes event-specific maps and estimated restoration windows that this page cannot replace.

Why PG&E Power Goes Out

In Northern and central California, an electric outage is usually local distribution, not a collapse of the bulk grid. Typical PG&E patterns:

Public Safety Power Shutoffs

Red-flag winds in high fire-threat districts can lead PG&E to de-energize lines before a spark. That is a planned safety outage, not a random equipment failure.

Atmospheric rivers and Sierra wind

Winter storms saturate soils and drop oaks and pines onto Bay Area and foothill circuits for days.

Enhanced powerline safety settings

Sensitive reclosing during fire season can trip a circuit for a momentary fault that would have stayed up in winter.

Car-pole accidents on suburban laterals

A single pole strike in a Peninsula or East Bay neighborhood can isolate a tap while the rest of the city is on.
