About PG&E Power Outages
Pacific Gas and Electric serves most of northern and central California, from the North Coast through the Central Valley to the western Sierra. PG&E outages are not only storm damage: Public Safety Power Shutoffs, enhanced powerline safety settings, and wildfire-season wind events can de-energize circuits on purpose. An atmospheric river can also take trees into lines in the Bay Area while the Valley stays on.

Why PG&E Power Goes Out
In Northern and central California, an electric outage is usually local distribution, not a collapse of the bulk grid. Typical PG&E patterns:
Red-flag winds in high fire-threat districts can lead PG&E to de-energize lines before a spark. That is a planned safety outage, not a random equipment failure.
Winter storms saturate soils and drop oaks and pines onto Bay Area and foothill circuits for days.
Sensitive reclosing during fire season can trip a circuit for a momentary fault that would have stayed up in winter.
A single pole strike in a Peninsula or East Bay neighborhood can isolate a tap while the rest of the city is on.
