About FPL Power Outages
Florida Power & Light is NextEra Energy's electric utility for much of the peninsula and part of the Panhandle. FPL's plant mixes overhead laterals with a growing underground network built after successive hurricane seasons. A 'FPL outage' search after a named storm often mixes real feeder damage with house-level breaker trips and municipal utilities that are not FPL.

Why FPL Power Goes Out
In Florida peninsula and the Florida Panhandle FPL territory, an electric outage is usually local distribution, not a collapse of the bulk grid. Typical FPL patterns:
Eyewall winds and inland tornadoes snap poles and flood pad-mounted gear from Miami-Dade through the Treasure Coast and west to the Gulf.
Central Florida's summer lightning density knocks reclosers and can take a single underground loop offline for hours.
Atlantic and Gulf exposure eats hardware on beach laterals; a small hardware failure can look like a neighborhood blackout.
Storm surge and king-tide flooding soak splices. Restoration can wait on pumping and cable tests even when overhead feeders are already back.

- Confirm whether the next house or the other side of the street still has lights.
- Check the main breaker and any GFCI/AFCI that may have tripped in a surge.
- Report in the FPL app or by calling the outage number on the bill if Power Tracker has no pin.
- Stay away from downed lines, flooded pad-mounted transformers, and standing water near equipment.
