Is there a Virginia Beach water outage today?

Not a citywide one, as far as we can tell. On October 25, 2026, we found no Virginia Beach Public Utilities notice about a widespread outage or a boil water advisory. Residents have reported water outages in the city on TrackOutages, including one in the Sparrows Point area in early October. Those reports show where people are noticing a problem. They do not show how large it is, and the utility has not confirmed them.

If your tap is dry, ask your neighbors first. If they are dry too, it is probably a street or area problem. Call the utility to confirm before you assume it is only your home.

Why water stops in Virginia Beach

Most outages here start with a water main break. In its January 2026 update, the city said crews had already responded to 15 breaks since the start of the year. The system has 1,608 miles of pipe. Repairs usually take four to six hours, though a large break can take longer.

In July, a break at 16th Street and Pacific Avenue on the Oceanfront interrupted service for several properties. City officials said service was fully restored around 2 p.m. the same day. A break can be fixed quickly and still leave a block dry for hours while crews work.

The Virginia Department of Health lists the usual causes of a disruption: water main breaks and repairs, pressure drops from equipment failure or power outages, and flooding. A pressure drop can leave taps dry even when no pipe has burst.

What to do if your water stops

  • Call during business hours: 757-385-4171 for urgent no-water calls.
  • Call after hours: dial 311 on nights, weekends and holidays. Online requests sent after hours are not seen until the next business day, so use the phone for anything urgent.
  • Report water in the street: standing or bubbling water can mean a break. Call 757-385-1400.
  • Check for a boil water notice. If one is issued, bring tap water to a full rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before you drink it, cook with it, make ice or mix baby formula. The same rule covers coffee, tea and any other drink made with tap water.

When service comes back, you may be asked to run the tap to flush the pipes in your home. Keep boiling until the utility or the health department says the water is safe.

Nearby: a Chesapeake main break

A water main break closed part of Eden Way North in Chesapeake, between River Birch Run North and Bayberry Place. As of October 16, there was no estimate for reopening. Chesapeake has its own utility, so this break does not tell us anything about Virginia Beach's system.
